Overview

This research explores how Asian American identified students respond to a racist photograph featuring a Black and Asian student. Asian Americans are lodged into an interesting position at the rise of this photo due to the ways in which their racial identity has been historically shaped, formed, and defined, especially in contrast to the racial formation of Black Americans. Through 3 focus groups with 20 Asian American students, we find that they have distinctive emotional reactions, desires, actions, and implications in response to the race-related incident at the University of San Francisco.

Our findings investigates the ways in which Asian Americans understand and respond accordingly to their own racial formations at the intersection of responding to the racially charged photograph.
